Mrs. Fischetti is honored to be Somerville’s Teacher of the Year 2017.  From a very young age, Mrs. Fischetti has wanted to be a teacher.  As a student herself, she was fortunate enough to have many wonderful teachers who understood her, supported her and inspired her along the way.   Now, she strives to do the same.

Mrs. Fischetti started her career just outside of Washington, D.C., teaching fifth grade in Fairfax County, Virginia for four years.  While she loved her colleagues and the community at Poplar Tree Elementary, her “home” was really in New Jersey.  And when there was an opening in Ridgewood for a fourth grade teacher, she applied and was hired -- to teach at her old elementary school.  Somerville School!   Mrs. Fischetti taught fourth grade for four years (when she was known as Ms. Zurla) and then had the opportunity to work one-on-one with first graders as the Reading Recovery teacher and be the in-house staff developer for Somerville for two years.  She then took a district-wide position as a staff developer for a year, working with teachers in grades K-5 to support curriculum and instructional initiatives.  Her job was varied: she planned and facilitated large and small group professional development sessions and worked closely with teachers in their classrooms in conjunction with building and district goals.  However, she missed the classroom and being part of a school community.  So when a third grade classroom teacher position opened up the following year at Somerville, she was thrilled to come back!  Mrs. Fischetti remained in third grade for six years before coming to second grade this school year.

When she is not teaching, Mrs. Fischetti loves spending time with her family.  She has two young sons (ages six and two) who keep her quite busy!  When she is not building with Legos/Duplos, chasing the little one around a playground or reading aloud her boys’ favorite books (for the hundredth time), she likes to try out new recipes in her kitchen, settle in with a great book of her own or peruse the aisles of Homegoods.

Mrs. Fischetti received her degree in Elementary Education from Boston College. She also has a master’s in Educational Leadership from the College of Saint Elizabeth and a holds a Reading Recovery certificate through Rutgers University.
